Understanding the SAP Process

If you have violated a Department of Transportation drug or alcohol regulation, you are required to complete the Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) process before becoming eligible to return to safety-sensitive duties.

The SAP process is federally mandated and provides a structured path for completing the required evaluation, education or treatment, follow-up evaluation, and return-to-duty process.

A Clear Path Through a Required Process

A DOT drug or alcohol violation can create uncertainty, particularly when your ability to work is affected. The SAP process provides a defined series of steps that must be completed before you may become eligible to return to safety-sensitive duties.

As a DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional, Dr. Gillon-Wright provides objective evaluation, recommendations, and follow-up throughout the process while helping you understand the requirements, expectations, and next steps.

SAP Evaluation Process

The SAP process follows a structured sequence designed to ensure that employees meet Department of Transportation requirements before becoming eligible to return to safety-sensitive duties.

  1. 1

    Initial Evaluation

A comprehensive substance use evaluation is conducted to assess relevant history, patterns of use, and substance-related concerns. The evaluation may include a clinical interview, review of relevant information, and standardized measures, as appropriate.

  2. 2

    Education and/or Treatment Recommendation

Based on the evaluation findings, Dr. Gillon-Wright provides recommendations for appropriate education and/or treatment that must be successfully completed before proceeding to the next stage of the SAP process.

  3. 3

    Monitoring and Compliance

Dr. Gillon-Wright reviews progress and confirms completion of the recommended education and/or treatment before conducting the follow-up evaluation.

  4. 4

    Follow-Up Evaluation

A follow-up evaluation is conducted to determine whether the employee has successfully complied with the recommendations and is eligible to proceed with the return-to-duty testing process.
